Ethics Bowl

I got a chance to volunteer at the day-long Ethics Bowl for the high school teams at Thompson Rivers University on March 12, 2022. I learnt so much about the event and did not realize until I was there that it was something that schools could participate in. They were high school teams with students mostly in grades 9-12. These teams did amazingly at collaborating and communicating as a team in order to efficiently declare what their stance was on some very tricky ethical questions. I feel very lucky to have taken part in the preparation and take-down of this event and would like to tune into the National Ethics Bowl which is being held virtually until they can find a way for all schools and teams to participate without financial barriers. I look forward to partaking in the Ethics Bowl with future schools and students.

BC Wildlife Park

I volunteered at the BC Wildlife Park helping the zookeepers prep food for the herbivores as well as feed and water the burrowing owls. During the winter of 2022, I was spending 3 hours a week at the park allowing me to learn and understand more deeply how the BC Wildlife Park runs and the importance of having that space. The park is a non-profit charity that cares for animals’ health and quality of life. Besides having the animals that can no longer be released into the wild, the park also has a rehabilitation center for animals around the region and a breeding facility for the endangered burrowing owls.

Dance assistant

Being part of the dance community group was a wonderful part of my childhood. I spent most of my evenings there waiting for dance classes or waiting for one of my siblings. The studio that I attended had a great program to assist with the financial cost of classes. If you help as an assistant to the teacher for at least three classes of younger students for the dance season they would waive the fee for one of your classes for the whole year. At an early age, about 10, until I was 16 this was a great way for me to have experience working with children in a space that I was comfortable in and helped me develop an excellent form of informal teaching.
