My journey of reconciliation is based on educating myself about the wrongs that happened in the past and creating a new future. Doing research to teach about why Truth and Reconciliation is important are my main priorities as a teacher. The holistic nature of Indigenous teaching is a way I strive to teach. I resonate with the First Peoples Principle “[l]earning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential, and relational (focused on connectedness, on reciprocal relationships, and a sense of place)”. When creating my lessons for students I find that I often lean to this principle.
Truth-and-ReconiliationThe Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action are created to support Indigenous groups in Canada. The document creates a space for the government and other parties to do better after the many terrible years of residential school for the Indigenous population of Canada. Specifically, actions 62-65 are directed towards the government for education regarding reconciliation and as a future teacher I need to make sure that I will be following these actions. I do hope that in the future we will see that this document is being followed as to me it seems like basic human rights that are being asked for.
